Iron, Fatigue, and the Hockey Player: A Connection Worth Understanding

Iron deficiency is one of the most common nutritional deficiencies in adolescent athletes, particularly female hockey players, and its effects on performance are profound and often mistaken for other problems. A player who feels persistently tired despite adequate sleep, whose performance has inexplicably declined, who seems to be working harder for diminishing results, or who gets winded more easily than usual may be experiencing the performance consequences of low iron status — and neither they nor their coaching staff may ever make the connection.


Iron is the mineral that enables red blood cells to carry oxygen from the lungs to working muscles. When iron stores are low, oxygen delivery to muscles is compromised, and physical performance suffers in ways that are directly measurable. VO2 max — the measure of aerobic capacity — drops. Perceived effort for a given workload increases. Recovery from hard training slows. The whole athletic system becomes less efficient, and no amount of conditioning work or skill development will compensate for a fundamental oxygen delivery problem.


The solution, when iron deficiency is confirmed through blood testing, involves both dietary and potentially supplemental intervention under medical supervision. From a dietary standpoint, the most readily absorbed form of iron is heme iron, found in red meat, poultry, and fish. Non-heme iron, found in plant foods like spinach, lentils, beans, and fortified cereals, is less readily absorbed but can be significantly improved by consuming it alongside a source of vitamin C. Avoiding coffee and tea with iron-rich meals also improves absorption, as these beverages contain compounds that inhibit iron uptake.


Get Tested, Not Guessed


If you or your player is experiencing persistent, unexplained fatigue and performance decline, a simple blood test ordered by your family physician can check iron stores — specifically serum ferritin, which is the most sensitive early indicator of iron depletion. Don't guess and don't supplement with iron without testing first, as excess iron supplementation carries its own health risks. Test, then act on the results with guidance from a healthcare provider.
