Leg Day for Hockey: The Foundation of Every Shift You Take

Every powerful stride you take on the ice originates in your legs and hips. The explosive first step that gets you to a loose puck, the sustained edge pressure through a corner battle, the ability to hold your legs under a physical challenge for sixty minutes — all of it is determined by the strength and power of your lower body. Leg training is not optional for hockey players who want to compete at a higher level. It is the single most impactful component of off-ice training for most players.


The foundation of any hockey player's leg training should be built on the major compound movements that develop integrated lower body strength across multiple muscle groups simultaneously. The squat — in its various forms — is the most fundamental. Back squats, front squats, goblet squats, and split squats all build quad, glute, and hamstring strength while demanding the hip mobility, core stability, and spinal alignment that carrying a load requires. The deadlift and its variations build posterior chain strength — glutes, hamstrings, lower back — that is essential for powerful hip extension in skating. Bulgarian split squats and single-leg variations address the unilateral strength that hockey's single-leg push demands.


In the summer training phase, leg training should be progressive — starting with moderate loads and controlled movements in early July, gradually increasing intensity and specificity through August. Two dedicated lower body training sessions per week, alongside plyometric work and skating sessions, is a solid framework for most junior players. More than that can be productive if recovery is managed well, but more is not automatically better — the quality of each session and the adequacy of recovery between sessions matters more than training frequency alone.


The Hockey Squat Pattern


The skating stance is a specific athletic position — hips back and down, knees bent, spine long, weight distributed through the whole foot. Your squat pattern should reflect and reinforce this position. Many hockey players have quad-dominant squatting patterns that don't fully engage the glutes and hamstrings, and correspondingly weaker posterior chains that limit their skating power. Work with a trainer to assess your squat mechanics and correct any patterns that don't translate well to the skating position. The time investment in movement quality at this stage pays compounding dividends when the weight goes up and the training specificity increases in August.
