Speed and Agility Training: Getting Faster for the Game That Matters

Speed in hockey is not a single attribute — it's a collection of related physical qualities that each contribute to how fast and effectively a player moves on the ice. Acceleration — the ability to reach top speed quickly from a standing or slow-moving start — is often more important in hockey than top-end speed, because the ice is finite and most plays happen in tight spaces where a player rarely gets to full velocity. Change of direction speed — the ability to decelerate, redirect, and accelerate again — is critical in every zone. And first-step quickness — the explosive push of the first stride — is what gets you to loose pucks and creates separation from opponents.
Off-ice speed and agility training develops these qualities in ways that translate to the ice, though imperfectly. The movement patterns are different, the surface is different, and the equipment changes the biomechanics significantly. But the underlying physical capacities — explosive leg power, rapid muscle activation, neuromuscular coordination, and the ability to decelerate and change direction under load — are trainable off the ice and do transfer to skating performance when developed consistently over a full summer.
Sprint training is the most direct off-ice speed development tool. Short, maximal-effort sprints — ten to forty yards — with complete recovery between repetitions develop acceleration capacity and the neuromuscular patterns of maximum speed running. Agility ladder drills develop foot speed and coordination, though their direct transfer to skating is more limited. Cone drills that require deceleration and direction change develop the reactive agility that game situations demand. Band-resisted sprints and sled pushes add load to acceleration movements and build the power expression that drives first-step quickness.
The Most Hockey-Specific Speed Work
Of all the off-ice speed and agility exercises available, the lateral bound — jumping from one foot and landing on the other, covering as much ground as possible laterally — is the most directly analogous to the skating push. The power, the single-leg stance, the lateral direction, and the landing mechanics all mirror what happens in a skating stride. Include lateral bounds, lateral hurdle jumps, and lateral shuffles in your speed training this summer. The carryover to your first step on the ice in September will be measurable.
